Yes, Tesla Powerwall 3 can be added to an existing solar installation, subject to checking the system and your home’s electrics. You do not necessarily need to replace your panels to start storing electricity for later use.

What changes when you add a battery?

Without storage, solar electricity that your home does not use is generally exported to the grid. A battery can store some of that surplus so it is available later, when your panels are producing less or nothing.

Will Powerwall keep the lights on during a power cut?

Powerwall can provide backup when the installation includes the appropriate backup equipment and design. What it can run, and for how long, depends on the circuits supported, the appliances in use and the charge available.

Decide what matters most before installation. Keeping lighting, refrigeration and internet equipment running creates a different requirement from supporting several high-demand appliances at once.

The proposal should make those limits clear so you understand the backup arrangement you are buying.

How do you know whether it is worthwhile?

Start with your current pattern. Are you exporting solar electricity in the afternoon and buying electricity in the evening? How does that change in winter? Is backup power an important part of your decision?

Ask for a quotation that considers your household’s actual usage and tariff arrangements. A clear assessment should explain both the expected benefits and the assumptions used, including the value of electricity you would otherwise export.
