Homeco Energy recently completed the installation of a 4.00 kWh solar PV electric system at the Hallam Community Hall located in Fulwood, Sheffield.

The 22 panel system was placed on a South West facing pitched roof laid with concrete interlocking tiles and then fed into the 3 phase electrical system which was located in the plant room.

The first job was to secure the panel rails onto the roof. In this case the tiles were raised and 48 hangers secured directly onto the roof joists which the rails then fasten on to. The tiles are then replaced making a watertight fit.

Here we are half way through the installation of the solar panels. They are laid in two rows of 11 panels each.

Semi-completed solar panels

This is how the installation looked after all the panels were secured in place.

Because the solar PV system was placed inside a public building we wanted to display the output of the system so that visitors and hall users could see firsthand the performance.

The display unit was placed inside the entrance lobby of the hall and displays the current and cumulative energy produced as well as the total savings of CO2.

The shot above was taken shortly after commissioning of the system and already it had produced its first kiloWatt hour of electricity.

The chart below shows the expected electricity generation of this system and the income that is produced by the feed in tariff. Note also that an electricity saving is made since the client no longer has to pay for the amount of electricity that his system produces.

System Size 4.00 kWh
Annual Generation kWh 3,334
Electricity Saving @ 12 pence per kiloWatt £400
Feed In Tariff Income @ 41.3 pence per kiloWatt £1,377
Year 1 Income and Savings £1,777
Year 5 Income and Savings - cumulative * £9,567
Year 10 Income and Savings - cumulative * £21,061
Year 25 Income and Savings - cumulative * £72,161
Pay Back time for this project 9 yr 6 mths

* The feed in tariff is guaranteed for 25 years and is index linked and therefore rises each year. We have taken a 3% inflation figure for this illustration.

Please note that the feed in tariff rates shown above are last years rates when this installation was completed. For all systems installed on or after 1st April 2011 the rate is now 43.3 p/kWh.
